Palliative Care is an interdisciplinary approach that identifies and treats symptoms for various types of suffering including physical, social, financial, psychological and spiritual. The goal is to prevent and relieve suffering, rather than halt, delay or reverse progression of the disease or provide a cure. The Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner will play an integral role in the Palliative Care Team.

Evaluates educational needs of staff and develops and implements plans to meet those identified needs.

Utilizes expertise in area of specialization to provide consultation services to health care providers and consumers.
- Assists in assuring that appropriate standards of care, practice and performance, and policy and procedures are in place.
- Demonstrates professional growth and leadership through continuing education and involvement in professional organizations.
- Participates in continuous quality improvement and JCAHO activities in order to promote high quality care.
- Accountable for program development within a subspecialty of oncology.
- Contributes to the mission of the Cancer Center through various activities.
- Assess and define immediate and long-term goals of patients and their family in preparing for and managing their disease while promoting advance care planning
- Educate the patient and family to promote understanding of the underlying disease process and care planning.
- Optimize symptom control and functional status through the disease continuum.
- Promote the highest quality of life for the patient and family.
- Establish an environment that is comforting and healing.
- Plan for discharge to the appropriate level of care (such as Hospice) in a timely manner.
EDUCATION:
Required: A Masters degree in nursing.
LICENSURE:
Required: Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Virginia as a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: 5 years or more current nursing experience with two (2) or more years previous experience in neuro oncology.
