Director of Nursing / DON / RN / Registered Nurse


BrightStar Senior Living is building a new assisted living and memory care community in Ft. Wayne, IN to open in June, 2019

The Director of Nursing reports to the Executive Director and is accountable for clinical oversight and safety of BrightStar Senior Living residents, educates and provides care and support to residents and their families and provides training/educational opportunities to the community’s staff. This role will provide indirect leadership for community staff including Resident Assistants, Dining Services, Activities and Housekeeping staff. 

Key Leadership, Management and Accountabilities (LMA): The Director of Nursing conducts assessments and plan reviews, manages resident electronic health records, acts as the residents’ advocate, educates and provides care and support to residents and their families, and provides training/educational opportunities to the community’s staff. As with others on the management team, the Director of Health and Wellness is responsible for providing on-call support to our direct care staff. 


Director of Nursing / DON Job Duties include:


  • Perform care as defined by resident's individual service plan  and within scope of state's nurse practice act   

  • Makes the initial evaluation visit and regularly reevaluates the resident’s nursing needs.

  • Initiates the individual service plan and makes necessary revisions within a person-centered framework.

  • Initiates appropriate preventive and rehabilitative nursing procedures.

  • Counsels the resident and family in meeting nursing and related needs.

  • Supervises, educates and coaches nursing personnel.



  • Assesses competency of clinical staff and ensures staff is assigned in a manner that promotes quality, continuity and safety of a resident’s care.

CLINICAL OVERSIGHT



•      Conducts assessments and individual service plan reviews with residents, potential residents and their families.



•      Maintains, updates and audits each resident’s electronic health record.



•      Assists in the admission and discharge processes.


RESIDENT SUPPORT



•      Educates and provides care and support to residents and their families.



•      Acts as residents’ advocate.



•      Builds relationships with residents and their families.


TRAINING AND COMPLIANCE



•      Provides training and educational opportunities to the community’s staff.



•      Educates residents and their families.



•      Promotes safety, education and accountability in the care and support of our residents.



•      Assists community care team in maintaining Residential Care Facility regulations according to ISDH and OSHA compliance.



•      Stays up to date on all emergency policies and procedures and participates and assists in drills within community.


NURSING BUDGET/SUPPLIES



•      Assists in the development and implementation of the nursing budget, ensuring clinical excellence, regulatory compliance and proper infection control.



•      Maintains stock supply of nursing equipment and products to help support the needs of residents.



•      Assists in assuring that physical property is maintained in a clean, safe and presentable manner for all current and prospective residents, as well as families and guests.


Education/Certification Requirements:



•      Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the State. Has completed a nursing management course with a clinical component or who has at least one (1) year of nursing supervision in the past five (5) years to serve as the Director of Nursing on a full-time basis.



•      Two (2)+ years of experience working in a healthcare role as a nurse, preferably from within a Long Term Care, Assisted Living and/or Memory Care facility.



•      Current Certification as First Aid and Choking, and Standard Precautions is preferred.


Skills/Qualifications Requirements:



•      Strong customer service and communication skills (English).



•      Experience in a leadership or managerial position preferred.



•      PC proficiency (including MS Office- Outlook, Word and Excel).



•      Valid driver’s license and auto insurance.



•      Ability to physically push a resident in their wheelchair distances of 50 feet or more on a regular basis.


Travel Requirements:



•      Limited travel as needed for various staff and client care service needs.


Up to 10% or as directed, based on the needs of the business and attending job required training and conferences.
