Infection Control / Employee Health Nurse

Job Description

This position is responsible for the daily management of the infection prevention, infection control and employee health program, provides specialized quality data and clinical education functions to the medical, dental and women’s health clinics.

This individual should be involved in the development of written infection prevention policies and have regular communication with Clinic Administration to address specific issues or concerns related to infection prevention. They are responsible for the development and ongoing refinement of infection prevention policies and procedures which should be based on evidence-based guidelines, regulations, or standards. This individual reaffirms Standard Precautions as the foundation for preventing transmission of infectious agents during patient care in all clinics service lines (adult medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, dental, behavioral health) and ensures validated sterilization processes are used to render a product free of all forms of viable microorganisms.

This position will be responsible for working along with and with the clinics.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the development and implementation of policies governing control of infection and communicable diseases and the development of a program for identifying, reporting, investigating, and controlling infections and communicable diseases. In addition, oversees the clinics infection control program to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and the Infection Control Plan. Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

Developing and implementing policies and standard operating procedures governing control of infections and communicable diseases.

Developing a system of identifying, reporting, investigating, and controlling infectious and communicable diseases

Conducting risk assessments related to infection control and provide corrective actions as needed. This individual conducts mock surveys utilizing Risk Area tracers to assess compliance with standards, relates the appropriate Standards to breaches identified with low, intermediate, high-level disinfection, and sterilization processes and prioritizes and documents the identified risks for acquiring and transmitting infections.

Performing clinic walk-through audits with a focus on Infection Control.

Demonstrating knowledge of current nursing practices and the roles and functions of clinical team members. Assisting with covering absent clinical team members to avoid disruption in clinic flow.

Collaboration with staff and others in the design and implementation of the program

Determining the need for, coordinating and chairing the Sharps Committee Meetings to ensure they are occurring at appropriate times and being conducted per Infection Control Plan.

Regularly assessing the program using an epidemiological approach that consists of surveillance, data collection, analysis and trend identification

Ensuring completion of audits regarding the implementation of and compliance with infection control plan, policies and procedures and other infection control initiatives

Coordinating with the larger community and cooperating with the county and state department of health regarding infectious and communicable disease reporting

Educating and training of staff on the program and related policy and procedures

Coordinating and communicating with Leadership, Quality Council, Team-members, and others on the program, data, and priorities and goals. Coordinates with nursing and medical staff leadership on improvement opportunities.

Coordinating the processes for investigating outbreaks and exposures

Collaborating with the Human Resource department and leadership for the immunization, screening, and post exposure for employees and others as indicated

Monitoring completion of all necessary screening and testing for all employees, upon hire, annually or post exposure.

Collaborating with the Human Resource department and leadership in the development and maintenance of the processes for identifying employees with infectious diseases and coordinating any work restrictions, referrals, and/or care as indicated.

Reviewing and revising the Infection Control Plan annually, or more often as needed.

Coordinating the hand hygiene program and improvement activities

Serving as the resource person during epidemiological events, employee exposures, and employee health related events

Ensuring that all necessary infection control supplies are adequately maintained in all clinics

Provides orientation/training programs, in-service, education and other education programs and materials needs

Serves as a resource for clinical and medical staff and assists in the development of orientation and education programs for clinical personnel.

Takes full responsibility for all functions within job description and prioritizes to meet deadlines on daily work and special projects.

Ensures patient, medical record, employee, and department confidentially is maintained at all times.

Follows clinics and department policies and procedures at all times. Develops new policies and procedures as needed.

Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.

Job Requirements

Education:

Nursing degree from an accredited nursing school required.

Experience:

Minimum of two (2) years  nursing experience required. Experience in infection control and/or quality management strongly desired

Certification:

Quality Improvement Certification preferred. Certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred.
