The Pharmacy Technician provides supportive pharmaceutical tasks for the Pharmacy Department; maintains an optimal level of pharmaceutical inventory through application of effective purchasing procedures with the appropriate contract vendors; develops and maintains external contacts which include medical service representatives from pharmaceutical companies, medical supply companies, professional peers from other Arizona/California/Nevada hospitals, local retail pharmacy outlets, customer service representatives from pharmacy computer vendor and automated dispensing cabinet support departments, and state and federal certification inspectors; performs specific activities required to handle medications in an effective and timely manner; assures appropriate storage and accurate delivery of needed medications; displays comprehensive knowledge of, and conforms to, hospital and department policies and procedures as well as state, federal and TJC pharmacy regulations and standards; works to optimize medication-related quality in the hospital; maintains required compliance documentation; promotes positive customer relations and actively contributes to a supportive and cooperative work environment within and outside the Pharmacy Department; protects health and safety of patients and staff by proper handling of chemicals and drugs; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
Medication Delivery. Assists the pharmacist in providing medication and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel, and the paramedics. Replenishes the code carts and exchanges them to units as needed in a timely manner.
Prepare IV Solutions. Prepares intravenous solutions, TPNs, admixtures and other sterile extemporaneous compounds in accordance with accepted aseptic techniques and USP Chapter 797 and USP 800 guidelines for sterile compounding.
Provide Customer Service. Approaches daily work assignments with an attitude of exemplary customer service and problem-solving to augment overall service provided by Pharmacy Performs all aspects of role in an environment that optimizes collaborative relationships with colleagues and patients, both in the department and externally Performs all aspects of role in an environment that optimizes patient safety and quality, and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors Cleaning. Maintains the Pharmacy Department in a clean and orderly manner, ensuring that pertinent materials are not discarded without approval of individuals responsible for them, Medication Storage. Maintains the medication storage locations (shelves, refrigerators, freezer, medication rooms, AccuDose cabinets) in clean and organized manner ensuring appropriate stock rotation Billing. Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients or other customers, computes charges and either enters them into the computer or forwards them for billing (includes Anesthesia, AccuDose Robot report, and Interdepartmental charges) Contrast. Delivers oral contrast to HRMC patients and provides instructions for use under the supervision of a pharmacist. Medication Expiration Completes assigned expiration date checks carefully and on a timely manner to ensure no expired drugs are accessible for use in the hospital Communication. Answers departmental telephones by the third ring . Properly identifies themselves to caller. Appropriately answers questions or fill requests as needed. Triages clinical questions to the pharmacist after gathering pertinent information regarding the caller's or their patient's need. Other Duties as Assigned. Demonstrates willingness to take on additional responsibilities and to help department meet service requirements at all times Performs other pharmacy-related duties effectively and efficiently as requested or required, including those of Pharmacy Supply Coordinator. Completes assigned projects in a timely and proficient manner.

Required Skills Must have strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Effective human relations skills are required for interfacing with team members, all levels of staff, physicians, patients, families and other contacts. Must possess the ability to effectively function in a stressful environment. Must possess the ability to use the following equipment; Telephone/Overhead Paging System/Fax Machine/Calculator/Computer. As pertinent to the position, must be able to use computer, telephone, calculator and adapt to new technology as it becomes available and necessary for the job. Must have a positive attitude, even temperament in stress/conflict situations.
