Clinical Laboratory Scientist

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist must meet the following qualifications:
- Education: CA approved equivalency of CLS (required); BS and 12 month internship at school of med technology (preferred)
- Licensure/Certification: CA state CLS license (required); ASCP or equivalent (preferred)
- Experience: McKesson LIS experience (preferred)
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist's responsibilities include:
- Demonstrating compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and taking action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and reporting suspected violations
Ordering and processing laboratory requests in accordance with established procedures
Collecting and processing all necessary paper work, assuring appropriate reporting
Assisting in ordering, maintaining, and restocking of supplies
Answering telephone and responding to questions or directing call to appropriate individual
Utilizing Laboratory Information Systems as appropriate
Disinfecting and maintaining work areas as needed
Performing proficiency testing as assigned
Complying with hospital and Laboratory safety policies and procedures
Supervising and verifying non-licensed personnel’s work
Performing and verifying quality control and patient test results
Performing calibration of instruments, and validation of instruments and/or procedures
Performing instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
Monitoring daily safety checks and temp logs
Maintaining awareness of workflow utilizing Order and Result monitors to achieve optimal departmental test turnaround times
Determining acceptability and appropriateness of specimens for testing and monitors results for accuracy and validity
Performing microbiology and immunology tests, as needed
Disinfecting and maintaining orderly/organized work environment
Performing other duties as necessary
Properly endorsing unfinished tasks to the next shift
Participating and assisting in student lectures and training
Performing ABO and Rh typing, antibody screening, and crossmatching, and entering results accurately into computer
Performing routine antibody identification, and antigen screening as necessary
Performing emergency blood release when required
Performing antibody elutions and adsorptions, as indicated
Irradiating blood when required. Modifying component in computer and verifies label before issue
Working-up suspected transfusion reactions and entering appropriate orders and results into computer
- Performing other duties as assigned
